Spug Painting

There is no set way to paint the Spugs. As has been mentioned in the background, the colour of the Spugs will depend on their habitat, the choice is up to you. The real insect world has endless examples of colour schemes that can be adapted for use in your Spug force.

The "Army Ant" Colour Scheme
In the end it was decided to paint the Spug army in colours based on Army Ants in the real world, all thanks to a BBC program "Life In The Undergrowth".

Colour Summary
This table summarieses the colours used in painting the No Limits Spugs. It also acts as a reminder for me so when it comes to paint more in the future they will hopefully look like the original batch!

An undercoat of black was applied to the whole model. Using various shades of brown, the segmented parts of the torso where picked out. The elbow joins, the spine, neck and underside of the head and the stomach are the main areas.

Spug Trooper Spine

The use of gloss black on parts of the miniature also helped to give some natural carapace look to parts of the body and head. Originally, the Spugs were given yellow eyes, but these seemed to dull, maybe it was the choice of yellow paint (I have never really found a decent yellow paint), in the end I opted to use orange and add a highlight of yellow.

Spug Unit Leader

The Toxcannon specialist is equipped with three tanks on a harness, to add some colour to the model and make it stand out from the unit, the tanks were each painted in different colour metallics.

The Jump Spugs are my favourite Spug models (at the moment anyway as I have just seen pictures of the new Heavy Infantry!) The winged jump packs were painted in dark grey and then drybrushed with light grey. The helmet visor/eye screen was painted red (although I tried silver and then metallic blue and then silver AND metallic blue first, but it did not work very well).
