Hoarding

Balsa wood is wonderful stuff. It is cheap. Very cheap. And you can easily make wooden constructions for wargames from houses to siege towers to battering rams and of course castle hoardings.

Hoardings were temporary constructions built onto castle walls during a conflict to allow the castle defenders to more easily target enemy warriors at the foot of the castle wall.

In designing the hoarding, there are a number of considerations to bear in mind. Not only does it have to look good, but the interior needs to accommodate defending models. This particular construction has been designed to sit on the wall crenelations and simply unhook when not required. The rear of the hoarding has been left open to allow for the easy access of models.

From the extended allure, two steps were built to give the models easy access to the main hoarding section. Each step was cut to 25mm wide to permit standard bases to stand without falling off!

The front of the hoarding has three working screen doors to allow the defenders to use boiling oil on any attackers foolish enough to move underneath the position.

A removeable roof was also constructed more for appearance than anything else.

Painting is the problem, creating a decent wood finish. There are some nice ideas here at the Last Alliance, a site featuring some modelling projects including lots of wooden effects!
